God's Nuggests

Everyday moments. Eternal truths.

God can use the simplest moments to remind us of His greatest truths. God's Nuggets is a collection of short, scripture-inspired reflections drawn from everyday experiences, unexpected observations, and quiet moments with God. Each nugget invites you to pause, reflec

Glasses and contacts correct blurry vision, allowing us to see more clearly. Likewise, God's wisdom and revelation bring clarity to our spiritual vision, opening the eyes of our understanding so that we may know the hope of His calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and the exceeding greatness of His power toward those who believe.

We need more than 20/20 vision. We need spiritual vision!

At 4:30 a.m., one of my dogs barked. After letting them out and feeding them, I went back to bed. As I pondered some things going on at work, I found myself lying there wide awake, so I decided to pray.

As I was praying, a light came on in our sunroom at 6:23 a.m., illuminating the surrounding rooms.

Although most of the house and even parts of the rooms next to the sunroom were still dark, the light changed my view. I could see things that our nightlight couldn't illuminate.

In the same way, God's Word lights our path, even when it's dark all around us. God's Word doesn't always reveal everything around us, but it gives us the light we need to take the next step.

“Asked and answered” is a legal objection raised when an attorney asks a witness a question that has already been asked and answered. The purpose of the objection is to prevent repetitive questioning that may badger or confuse the witness.

When the enemy badgers us about past sins or tries to confuse us about our future or God’s purpose for our lives by reminding us of past sins and failures, we must object! Objection! Asked and answered! We repented, God forgave us, and the enemy doesn't get to keep putting our past on trial!

I usually wake up early to spend time with God and then go back to sleep. As I pray, our dog always watches me from the door. He doesn't come in or make any noise. He just watches over me.

When I saw him watching me this morning, it reminded me that we serve a God who watches over us at all times.

God does not slumber! He is watching over you 24/7!

Fire is “the visible effect of the process of combustion – a special type of chemical reaction. It occurs between oxygen in the air and some sort of fuel. The products from the chemical reaction are completely different from the starting material.” (Science Learning Hub, accessed November 20, 2022)

A consuming fire destroys what cannot withstand it; a refining fire removes impurities from what is being purified.

Just as fire changes the material it encounters, an encounter with God can transform us. Although God is a consuming fire, His work in the lives of His children is not intended to destroy us, but to refine us.

When God takes us through the refining fire, we won't come out the same. We come out better!

Think about Pilate and consider how his actions compare to your own life and decisions. He knew that the chief priests had delivered Jesus to him out of envy. Yet, just five verses later, Pilate, wanting to please the people, released Barabbas and delivered Jesus to be crucified.

Pilate knew better, but he chose to please PEOPLE!

How many times have we compromised our faith to please people? Repeated gossip, complained about our circumstances, repeated the devil's report instead of God's Word . . .

It's a scary thought!

When pleasing people becomes more important than pleasing God, what are we willing to sacrifice?

John the Baptist was in the desert, the wilderness, until the day his public ministry began. Think about how powerful his ministry was, yet he grew and became strong in spirit while in the wilderness!

This miracle baby, who would be great in the sight of the Lord (v. 15) and turn many people back to God (vv. 16–17), grew and became strong in spirit in the wilderness until his appointed time.

Don't despise your wilderness! It may be the very place where God is preparing you and strengthening you for what He's called you to do.

The wilderness may be a place where resources are limited, friends are hard to come by, you don't have the expensive car or big house, you have to live on a budget, you have to love and pray for your children despite their actions, or you have to swallow your pride and resist the temptation to expose those who have wronged you.

But don't mistake your wilderness for God's absence! He may be strengthening you in private for what He's preparing you to do in public.

When you need work done around your house, perhaps a new patio or a fresh coat of paint, you research qualified contractors and arrange for them to assess the project and provide an estimate of what the work will cost.

But what do you do when something in your life needs to be repaired, restored, or built?

1. Go to the One who is qualified. Seek God! James 4:2 reminds us, "ye have not, because ye ask not." Jesus tells us to ask, seek, and knock. We serve a God who is more than qualified to handle whatever concerns us!

2. Surrender the project to God. When we hire a contractor, we agree to pay for the work. But we can't purchase God's power or favor. The cost to us is not money, but a willingness to surrender our will, humble ourselves, and trust Him with the outcome. James 4:7 reminds us, "Submit yourselves therefore to God."

3. Don't underestimate what God can do! A contractor's estimate tells us what a project is expected to cost. But how do you estimate the ability of a God who can do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think?

You can't put an estimate on God's power! Don't limit Him to what you can see, imagine, or afford!

By definition, sandpaper is paper covered on one side with ABRASIVE MATERIAL used for smoothing and polishing.

God can USE the ABRASIVE MATERIAL around you to SMOOTH and POLISH you!

Sometimes, the layers of personal achievement and self-reliance we've built up become a protective coating that keeps us from fully depending on God. Through life's abrasive experiences, those layers can be rubbed away. And just as a craftsman sands wood to prepare it for staining, God can use life's challenges to prepare us for His transforming work, making us look more and more like Him—HIS MASTERPIECE!

The abrasive material on sandpaper can be naturally occurring minerals or synthetic materials. Likewise, the abrasive experiences in our lives may come from circumstances beyond our control—a spouse, a child, a co-worker, a health concern, or even a pandemic. Other abrasives may be artificial layers we've created ourselves—the things we've attached importance to, relied upon, or allowed to define us.

Either way, God can use the friction, irritation, and challenges of life to smooth our rough edges, refine our character, and prepare us for our AND NOW moment!

NOW. In this present time. Not yesterday. Not in a decade. NOW. Not when you feel like it. NOW!

NOW represents both TIME and a COMMAND.

God prepares us, if we allow Him, for HIS WILL in our lives. When God calls us for a purpose, He doesn't leave us to fulfill that calling in our own strength. Like any good leader, God prepares and equips us for the assignment.

Our natural minds can envision preparation and equipment, but God's preparation goes beyond what we can see. It involves TRANSFORMATION. We must learn to act, speak, and respond in ways that reflect Him because when He sends us out, we must operate under HIS AUTHORITY, not our own.

He equips us with spiritual weapons to stand against the schemes of the enemy and the powers of darkness. Carnal weapons cannot accomplish what requires spiritual power!

When your AND NOW moment comes, you must be ready to respond. It may require courage, obedience, sacrifice, or stepping beyond what feels comfortable.

Esther faced such a moment. She had been positioned in the palace, but when her people were threatened, she had to decide whether she would act. Mordecai challenged her with a question that still speaks to us today: "For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father's house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" — Esther 4:14 (KJV)

When God says AND NOW, it's not about your convenience. It's about HIS TIMING, HIS PURPOSE, and your willingness to OBEY!
